I refer to this garden below our living room bay window as our salsa garden because it is overflowing with 5 varieties of tomato plants, jalapenos and hot peppers. I look at it and go all saucer eyed, but the saucers are mason jars of spicy salsa! We also have a row of carrots planted along the back of the first box and two marigolds keeping the pests away!
My husband made this garden by making three boxes 16 inches wide by 8 feet long and 8 inches deep. The bottom box sits right on the ground with two stakes driven into the ground on the inside along the front edge. He leveled the box before screwing it into the stakes to keep it level. The second box has a scrap plywood bottom purposely leaving slight gaps for drainage. The front edge of the second box rests on the back edge of the first box. The legs are screwed onto the back (again to level the box) and are made from scrap 2x4. The process is repeated with the third box, resting it on the back edge of the middle box. Each box is lined with landscaping cloth and filled with dirt.
This garden seems to be in the perfect location for tomato plants. They are going crazy in there, in full bloom with lots of little tomatoes all over the place. I made the mistake of putting a couple of hot pepper plants in the top box, and they are not completely shaded by the gigantic tomato plants so the only hot pepper plants doing well are the couple in the front box. Lesson learned for next year!
Can't wait to get my salsa making on!
